Are Quavo and Takeoff Related? Unc & Phew Explained

Yes. Quavo is Takeoff's uncle. Takeoff's mother, Titania Davenport, is Quavo's sister, and AP's 2023 reporting describes the two as uncle and nephew. That is also where their duo name comes from: Unc & Phew is short for uncle and nephew.

How Are Quavo and Takeoff Related?

Quavo's sister, Titania Davenport, is Takeoff's mother, which makes Quavo his uncle by blood. The two grew up together in Lawrenceville, in Gwinnett County, the suburbs northeast of Atlanta. Quavo was born in Athens, Georgia; Takeoff was born in Lawrenceville.

The detail that trips people up is the age gap. Quavo is only about three years older than his nephew, which is not the usual picture of an uncle. The age gap is small, but the relationship is not in doubt.

Is Offset Related to Quavo and Takeoff?

Not by blood. For years Offset was commonly called Quavo's cousin, and plenty of articles repeated it. Variety's 2023 cover story reported that Offset is not biologically related to Quavo or Takeoff, and Uproxx pointed out that the detail came from Variety's writers.

According to that reporting, Offset was Quavo's classmate and started spending time with him and Takeoff in sixth grade. So he is family in the group sense: the third member of Migos, alongside Quavo and Takeoff, from the group's early Gwinnett days through its biggest records.

Who Are Unc & Phew?

Unc & Phew is the duo Quavo and Takeoff formed as a pair, outside the Migos trio. Their first single, "Hotel Lobby", came out on May 20, 2022. A second single, "Us vs. Them" with Gucci Mane, followed that summer.

Their only album, Only Built for Infinity Links, was released on October 7, 2022, through Quality Control and Motown. It has 18 tracks and includes both singles.

Takeoff's Death and Legacy

Takeoff died on November 1, 2022, in Houston, Texas, AP reported. He was 28. Only Built for Infinity Links had been out for less than a month.

His legacy runs through the Migos catalogue and through Unc & Phew, the project where his voice sat level with Quavo's. "Hotel Lobby" was certified platinum by the RIAA on November 30, 2022. In June 2023, Quavo and Offset honoured him together at the BET Awards; our Hotel Lobby song guide covers that tribute.
